Spring and early summer are the best times to catch Medano Creek when it's high, just be aware that this is the windy season in the San Luis Valley. Pack layers and eye wear to guard you from getting sandblasted.

The trail can be extremely muddy and boggy during the spring, with the last push up to the upper lake covered in ice and snow. The trail is usually pretty doable by Independence Day
