Top Ways To Save Space In Your Backpack Before Travelling

Packing is truly stressful and an extremely strenuous task. Here's some of my handy tips that I learned about when I went travelling which really helped me out!

I found the biggest dilemma when I travelled around South-East Asia last year was packing my backpack, which almost seemed like an impossible task. I felt as though I had to pack for every occasion but in the end, had the luxury of knowing I could purchase stuff out there too. Unfortunately, my parents were the type to make sure that everything was covered and kept providing me with extras that made my rucksack even bigger. This forced me to do some research to see if there were any nifty ways I could overload my backpack. So here are some of my tips to save space and have the ability to add a little extra to the load.

Roll Rather Than Fold

Until this day, I’m still baffled as to how this is possible. I fully expect that rolling clothes cover up far more space than folding them, right? That’s not the case at all. In fact, rolling clothes in my backpack saved so much more space I was truly shocked. It made my clothes more compact and in some cases, they could be stuffed in to fill even more space that I’d found!

Start Heavy and Work Your Way Up

During my time travelling, as you can imagine, there were many modes of transport that I took in order to get around. Especially the train services going through India. How I even managed to get a seat is beyond me. They, of course, have storage where you’re able to put your luggage and with it being so packed you want it to be a swift transition. Therefore, I recommend packing heavy at the top and get lighter the higher you go. That way, if there’s a tight squeeze for the spot, it makes it way easier to get in.

Washer Bags Are A No Go

I’ll be honest, I’m a big fan of my washer bag. Knowing that all my dental and toiletries are in one pouch makes it so much easier than trying to find my thin toothbrush in a massive bag. However, it’s one tip that I’m probably extremely grateful for. Mainly because they really do take up far too much space and it’s completely unnecessary. Instead, I used food bags to help keep my toothbrush and other toiletries clean which was really useful.

Make The Most Of Glasses Cases

Being in such a hot continent the weather was of course fantastic. Plenty of Sun which allowed me to utilise my sunglasses well. Another way I utilised it is through the case and packing things inside there to make the most of the space. Anything from miniature bottles to earphones, they were really handy!

It’s fair to say that whether you’re travelling across the globe or simply packing a suitcase for a week stay in your Algarve villa rental, packing truly is the devil’s work. It takes hours and the majority of the time it just becomes too stressful. Hopefully, some of my useful tips will help with getting your through the struggle though. They definitely helped me!
