Retirement is finally here. Your work days have come to an end, you’ve celebrated, and now you’re thinking about spending your days as a retiree on the road. When you close your eyes, you may imagine yourself spending a few days in Hawaii, enjoying the climate in sunny Florida, or taking a view of a beautiful scenic landscape in Australia. If you can’t decide, we’ve compiled a list of the 5 best destinations to travel when you’re retired. Where would you land on the list?

1. The Maldives

The Maldives is an obvious holiday choice of many retirees. How couldn’t it be, with its 1,200 islands surrounded with luminous white sands and blue waters filled with exotic, tropical fish, caves, and dazzling corals. There are plenty of options when it comes to resorts (over 100 to choose from), and each one of them boasts its own private island. From casual guesthouses to six-star hotels, there are different levels of luxury to suit all pockets. As a retiree, you can opt for Lily Beach Resort & Spa, a family-friendly spot with an all-inclusive plan that covers activities, meals, and drinks. If you’re physically active, you can make use of the water sports and land available.

2. Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is Thailand’s tropical paradise island, a marvelous and affordable destination for many retirees who can spend their time there living in grand style. Phuket provides a stunning standard of living, and an excellent climate for spending a bulk of time outdoors, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing or playing golf. We recommend The Village Coconut Island, with grandiose contemporary suites and villas equipped with full kitchens and plunge pools with great views of the Phang Nga Bay and gorgeous gardens. There’s a cooking school where you can learn to make traditional Thai meals, as well as on-site restaurants. Guests can enjoy the hotel’s private beach as well as the two infinity-edge pools.

3. Botswana

According to the Global Peace Index, Botswana takes the second place. Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, is a wonderful place for visiting or moving to spend your retirement days. The official language of this peaceful country is English, and the country is one of the riches in the area due to their business in diamond exports. Consider going to andBeyond Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp, a luxurious safari lodge located in the middle of the Okavango Delta, where you can get a close experience of the exotic wildlife. Bush walks, river cruises, game drives, guided excursions, and delicious Pan-African food is included in the price of your stay. The safari tents have indoor-outdoor showers, big soaking tubs, private plunge pools, and foster beds decorated with motifs inspired by the delta region.

4. New South Wales, Australia

If you’re thinking about going to Australia, there are many amazing places to retire in on the southern continent. We suggest New South Wales, which may seem as an obvious choice due to the quaint country setting and the vineyards. Merimbula is a wonderful retirement spot for those who want to spend their days in quiet and relaxation, and it takes only a few hours by car to reach Sydney, one of Australia’s main hubs. The weather is great all-year round, the national parks and beaches are superb for walking excursions and swimming, and there are plenty of leisure facilities, restaurants, clubs, and shops. In case you wish to spend a few days on another destination, Merimbula has its own airport, which will save you from lengthy car drives. The state is blessed with a strong economy, the standard of living is high, and great life opportunities, and if you like it there, there are retirement homes for sale you can consider purchasing for your retirement life in Australia.

5. Portugal

The climate in Portugal is generally mild, with great beaches along the western coast. There’s plenty of good wine and food, laidback air, and old cities to visit and explore. The capital, Lisbon, offers concert halls, museums, great cafes, restaurants, and other things you’d expect a capital city to offer. Just a half an hour away are seaside towns, Estoril and Cascais, which are popular due to their wonderful beaches. Many Portuguese speak English, which makes it a lot easier to blend in and get your way around. Portugal has a growing popularity among retirees because of the country’s cost of living and real-estate, allowing a couple to live on $1,700 per month (including rent).

These countries offer great amenities that retirees seek for, such as access to recreation and good health care, while they’re still affordable and compact enough. When it comes to choosing a destination for retirement, whittling down the possibilities is a great challenge. We hope that this list has made your selection easier, and that you’ll find what you prize the most in some of these countries.
