Added by Wesetthesails

White water rafting into one of the most spectacular canyon in North Iceland

Getting there:

On Road No.1 coming from Reykjavik (305km/190mi or 4-hour drive), take right just before Varmahlíð or from Akureyri (110km/68mi or 1.5-hour drive), turn left just after the town.

You won't miss the junction thanks to the huge recognizable sign from the rafting company. Once on road 752 and after around 15km/9.3mi, the base camp will be on the left side. After 30 minutes driving through the mountains, the bus drops you off at the starting point of  the trip.

Trip conditions:

In total, the trip lasts 6 hours of pure adrenaline boost in a breathtaking canyon crossed by the river Jökulsá-Austari. This river comes from the glacier Hofsjökull, situated 40km/23.6mi away in the highlands.

The river is rated 4+ on a 6-point scale, meaning long and difficult rapids with narrow passages and turbulent water. It is the wildest river in Iceland used for rafting.

Before the trip, the guides give precious security advices which allow everyone to be confident and enjoy at the fullest. 3 or 4 kayaks are constantly on the river to ensure the maximum of security. The river is considered as one of the best in Europe and as a must in Iceland for adrenaline junkies!
