Explore a remote island in North Iceland

Siglufjarðarvegur, Iceland

The feeling of being on a remote island within an island is unique. After a 30-minute sailing and short hike, one is rewarded with hundreds of puffins flying around.

Starting from Hofsós harbour, the boat sails along the basalt columns of Skagafjörður coastline, that were formed about two millions years ago. Then it heads straight to a very preserved island, Málmey, that has been uninhabited since 1950, after the last inhabitants lost their house in a fire.

Sailing takes about 30 minutes but it is worth spending 2-3 hours at the top to have time to enjoy the panoramic view over the Greenland Sea. Definitely a good spot for bird enthusiasts desiring to see puffins!

Getting there:

From Ring Road No. 1 coming from Akureyri, turn right to take road 76, and drive 45km until you reach Hofsós.

GPS Points: N65° 53' 51.083" W19° 24' 45.284"
