Hike to the Waterfalls at Kauai's Secret Beach
Disclaimer - as I was shown this spot by a local, I would suggest asking for the exact location of the trail from a local. It can be reached by one of the nearby neighborhood roads in Kilauea. The boot path is fairly short (approximately a mile or so), and involves a short stream crossing, which can be a bit tricky if there have been any recent rain storms. The lava formations are located to t...
Secret Beach
Is a so-called ‘secret beach’ that sits on Secret Beach Road considered secret anymore? Perhaps not, but don’t let that deter you from exploring the depths of Kauai’s renown Kauapea Beach, more widely known as Secret Beach.
The 3,000-foot long north shore beach is known for it’s size, privacy, and scenery. Its location between Kalihiwai Bay and Kilauea Point sets the beach up for pure photogra...
Wai Koa Loop Trail
The trailhead is located next to the Kauai North Shore Dog Park, off Kahiliholo Road Highway near the Malama Kaui Community Farm & Kalihiwai Community Garden. A Waiver for the trail is no longer required. There is plenty of parking and the trail is open to the public from 9am to dusk. There is no charge unless you wish to rent mountain bikes.
The footpath, which can be very muddy, starts ...
Anini Beach Park
The shallow nearshore ocean bottom makes Anini a great beach to visit if you have kids. Anini Beach Park is also a snorkeler's delight - here you may spot Hawaii's state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a (triggerfish) and uhu (parrotfish), kala (unicornfish) and other tropical fish. On the downside, there are some sharp corals and rocks on the nearshore ocean bottom, so take extra care when wadi...
Hike to Wyllie's Beach
Wyllie's beach is a small beach next to Anini beach. It is on the northwest side of the river mouth. There is a 0.8 mile trail down to the beach. The trail head is near the Westin Princeville. This is a handy beach for those staying in the Princeville area, as it is walkable from most vacation homes here.
There are many trees and much shade on the beach. While hiking the trail to and from the b...
Scramble the Okolehao Ridge Trail
They don't call it the butt slide trail for nothing— the Okolehao Trail (translated to iron butt, for more than just the glutes involved) —is a short drive from Princeville, just before Hanalei Bay. Filled with lush vegetation, ample wildlife, and stunning viewpoints, the full trail isn't for the faint of heart, particularly if it rains at all. When I embarked on this route I had no idea having...
