See the Views at Black Rock Mountain
Clayton, Georgia
Description
Added by Sabrina Norris
This mountain park is just about 2 hours from North Atlanta and boasts 11 miles of hiking trails and amazing views.
Black Rock Mountain State Park is located off of US Highway 441, just outside of Clayton. Brown signs on the side of the road in Mountain City guide the way to the turnoff.
The road leading to the visitor's center is paved and well maintained, if steep. On the way up, there's a nice wooden overlook that juts out from the road over the valley.
Admission to the park is $5, and it is pet friendly. There are picnic tables and other places to sit, and four hiking trails with varying difficulty.
The parking lot and visitor's center area are on the summit, at around 3,600 feet. The park does close when the weather gets cold. It is a steep drive to the top, and snow and ice can make it a dangerous trip. Check the website here for closings.
I've only visited once, and stayed around the parking lot to look at the views. We also stopped off at the Black Rock Mountain Overlook, which is a slight pull-off on the side of the road on the way up to the top.
