A unique community on the coast of Georgia, Liberty County is a destination for a multitude of reasons. From fishing & hunting to eating with friends, we’ve done our best to narrow down all the reasons to visit to eight of our favorites. Plan your trip to explore Liberty County and discover what else there is to love!
1. The sky at sunset/sunrise.
If you don’t take the chance to sit and watch the sky as the sun rises or sets on the Liberty County coast, you’re truly missing out. This favorite past time of many in Liberty County is something every visitor must try. As the sun moves across the sky the typical bright blue hue is a painter’s dream. You’ll slowly see the pinks, reds, oranges and yellows of the changing day emerge across your field of vision.
2. The fishing.
Whether you want to sit on a dock for the day or catch the breeze on the water in a boat, Liberty County is sure to yield a delicious bounty. From the docks of our coastal community, you’ll catch flounder, sea trout, red drum and sheepshead.
3. The hunting.
Located near Midway, Dorchester Shooting Preserve offers a weekend hunting getaway. Enjoy quality dining, accommodations and of course, spectacular hunting. This hunter’s paradise is a 5,000-acre hunting preserve on the southeast Georgia coast offering quail hunting, continental pheasant shooting, wild boar hunting, sporting clays and coastal fishing.
4. The birds.
Liberty County is home to a variety of species of birds. Plan a trip to catch the painted buntings, hummingbirds or pileated woodpeckers in their natural habitat. You can catch these colorful critters in a variety of locations throughout Liberty County but Fort Morris Historic Site in Sunbury is a designated stop on the bird trail.
5. The history.
To say Liberty County is full of rich history would be an understatement! The coastal county was established in 1777 with Sunbury as its county seat. Over the course of the last 240 years Liberty County has been home to two signers of the Declaration of Independence, played a role in the Revolutionary & Civil Wars and was even a stop for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement.
6. The locals.
This may be one of the best reasons to visit and quite frankly is our favorite! Liberty County is miniature melting pot thanks to Fort Stewart the largest Army base east of the Mississippi River. While this community is growing rapidly, the small-town charm still remains. You’ll be greeted with a smile wherever you go, no one will hesitate to tell you where to get the best piece of pie, and if you’re lucky you’ll meet Mrs. Charm one of the county’s favorite residents. Every day is a holiday in Liberty County, and she’ll make sure you don’t miss out on the celebrating!
7. The food.
Wow, where to begin! As a part of the Georgia coast, Liberty County has some of the best seafood around. Take a night to visit the Sunbury Crab Company for some fresh blue crab, shrimp or oysters! Heading inland a bit, you’d be astounded at the options. Whether you prefer BBQ from Shonuff Smokin’ Good BBQ or the Rusty Pig, or Rodeo’s Mexican cuisine, there is a plate for every palate.
8. The water.
Liberty County is a playground for those who love the water. You’re sure to see the locals enjoying their free time near whatever river, creek or shoreline they can find. Whether you prefer to kayak the lazy creeks or pack the boat up and head out for a day on St. Catherines, there’s a water activity for everyone!
