Climbing In Railay Thailand

Railay Peninsula offers world-class climbing for beginners to advanced climbers.

Here you will find limestone walls on spectacular mountain formations right next to beautiful turquoise beaches.

There are numerous climbing walls and hundreds of climbs up and down thousand-year-old stalactites and caves.

We spent 2 days climbing in two areas of Railay and wish we had more days! We climbed during low tide around 12 - 4pm in June. Some of these routes are not accessible during high tide.

The dynamic stalactites formations made great holds. Watch out for the sparrow and wasp nests though! My climbing partner actually got stung on the way up and it was no fun.

In Tonsai Bay, Railay West, and Railay East you can rent gear as well as hire a guide. Dum’s Kitchen and 1-2-3 wall offer fun sport climbing routes right on the beach. Gear is slightly cheaper in Tonsai.

After climbing be sure to take a dip in the refreshing ocean and enjoy the vibrant sunset. Better yet with a fresh coconut in one hand and banana roti in the other.

To get there from Bangkok catch a flight to Krabi. You can stay in Aonang which is a small town with a good selection of hotels and restaurants. Take a 15 minute ferry on a long tail boat to Tonsai Beach or Railay West. You can also stay in Railay East or West right below the crag.

During low season you might have the place to yourself! But expect passing rain and look for climbing walls that have some overhung areas that stay dry.

One last thing, I noticed there was a lot of garbage on the beach so please do your part and if possible leave the place better than you found it.

Have fun and stay safe!
