185 total miles of trail (flexible)Historic tow pathFollow along the Potomac RiverHiking and cyclingMany camping options
Hike along a historic canal, dating back to 1828. This trail accommodates everything from multi-day backpacking or cycling trips, to a variety of day trips, as well as other activities.
The full 185 mile trip might sound tempting (and is popular with local cyclists) but starting out with shorter trips is probably the way to go, at first. You can start either from the Cumberland or DC side of the trail, depending on your location. This trail does gain some notable elevation, depending on how far you travel.
If you are planning a more extensive adventure, note that this trail is also great for accessing other trails, including the Great Allegheny Passage and the Appalachian Trail, among others.
Beyond outdoor adventures, there are also plenty of attractions for history buffs, including canal boat rides, museums, and exploring the canal locks.
