Perins Peak, located in Durango, Colorado, is a popular hiking destination known for its unique natural features and challenging trails. The trail spans approximately 5.77 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 1,673 feet, making it a moderate to difficult hike. The trail begins in a dense forest of Ponderosa pines, gradually ascending towards the peak. Along the way, hikers will encounter a variety of wildlife, including deer and various bird species. The trail also features a number of unique rock formations, adding an element of geological interest to the hike. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Animas River Valley and the surrounding San Juan Mountains. The peak also overlooks a small lake, offering a scenic spot for a rest or picnic. Hikers are advised to wear sturdy footwear due to the rocky terrain and to bring plenty of water, especially during the summer months. The trail is best hiked from April to October, and dogs are allowed but must be kept on leash.
