The Harrison Plane Crash hike near Palmer Lake, Colorado is an adventurous trek to the site of a 1967 plane crash in the Pike National Forest. This moderately difficult, 11.1 miles out-and-back trail takes hikers from the town of Palmer Lake up into pine forests and mountain meadows to reach the remote crash site, sitting at an elevation of 2,031 feet. While somber, the scattered wreckage of the fatal 1967 crash is fascinating to explore and photograph. Plan for a 5-6 hour hike and bring plenty of water and snacks to enjoy along the way. The crater and debris left by the crash remain decades later, a sobering reminder of the site's history. While a solemn spot, the beautiful, peaceful setting in the pine forest also makes it worth the trek for avid hikers. With amazing scenery and an interesting historical point of interest off the beaten path, this Palmer Lake area trail is great for experienced hikers up for a longer, more secluded adventure. Be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles when visiting the crash site to respect the history. Early summer is a great time to hike this trail when wildflowers are in bloom across the meadows. Keep an eye out for wildlife like black bears, elk, and moose that wander through the area. And on a clear day, the views from the crash site of Pikes Peak and the surrounding ranges are unbeatable.
