Looking to bag your first Colorado 14er but not sure which mountain to tackle first? Check out Mt. Bierstadt (Elevation 14,060 ft) along the Colorado Front Range; this hike offers it all, with its breathtaking views, summit exposure and adventurous hike to the top.

Getting there is easy:

Only one hour and 20 minutes from Denver. The trail-head for Mt. Bierstadt is accessed from Guanella Pass just past the charming mountain town of Georgetown. Parking and restroom facilities can be found on the top of Guanella Pass with stunning views of Mt. Bierstadt (South East) and Sawtooth Ridge (East).

The Hike (Beginner to Intermediate)

Trail head starts from the parking lot on top of Guanella Pass (Elevation 11,670 ft). Follow along wide path, make your way down towards a small picture perfect lake situated right in-front of Sawtooth Ridge. Snap a few good pics and continue along an elevated wooden walkway across the marshy flat until reaching the base of Mt. Bierstadt. Follow the trail along the West Slope, quickly gaining elevation. Approximately half way up the trail, you will find yourself face-to-face with Sawtooth Ridge and gasping for air! Pushing on, the trail becomes Steeper and Rockier. Welcome to the Rocky Mountains! At about 3/4 of the way to the summit, follow 'Cairns' when the dirt path starts to dissolve into solid rock. Right before gaining the summit, views of Frozen Lake appear to the South. Last push to the top, and you made it! Summit of Mt. Bierstadt (Elevation 14,060 ft) From the Summit, enjoy panoramic views of the Front Range and views of Mt. Evans (14,264 ft) and the Meyer-Womble Observatory in the near distance.

Total Time:

Varies based on an individuals endurance level and athleticism. Plan for 4+ hours.
