Ride the historic train, tour the abandon mines, and fish at Georgetown Lake. Explore this old mining town in the mountains of Colorado. Georgetown offers fun activities that are family friendly and rich in history.
Georgetown is only about an hour from Denver and made for the perfect day get-away.
We started our day in Georgetown by visiting the Georgetown Loop. It is the historic train that was built in the mining era and continues to be operated to by old steam engines. The Loop cost $25.00 to ride and was narrated with a lot of fun historic facts. The Loops is known for its 95ft bridge that makes for a very dramatic picture.
Along the way we passed through Silver Plume mine and had to stop and take a tour. We were escorted through the old town and then through the mine. Our guide was witty, and knowledgeable. In the mine we were able to see veins silvers worth millions but now obtainable because of Interstate 70. He also told us the story of the Tommy knockers which are these ghosts that saved the miners from the collapsing mines.
After the mine tour we hoped back on the train and went back the train station.
Next on our itinerary was fishing.
We stopped at a local grocery store, picked up some sandwiches and bait, then grabbed some brews and went to Georgetown Lake.
The lake is huge and beautiful full of families enjoying the water and fishing. We parked our truck right up to the water and fished off the tailgate.
The wind picked up and we didn't catch anything but we sure had fun trying. (The local boys say the best fishing is by the dam).
After watching the sunset we headed back down to the city, happy after a great day in the mountains.
