Description
Added by Jaymie Kling
This hike is 2.2 mile trail that begins just half an hour past the Blue Mesa Resevoir. Pioneer point offers astounding views of the black canyon.
Starting at 10,000 feet elevation this 2.2 mile hike descends about 1,000 feet down into the Black Canyon. There are multiple look out points on top of hill that are very easily accessible but the real views, lie on the descending trail. The first half of the hike, the trail is sand/dirt terrain. The further down you descend the louder you can hear the stream ahead. About halfway down, the trail follows alongside a stream that leads to the Colorado River. This terrain is mostly rock from here on out. Until you reach a sandy beach at the bottom. The view from the beach is breathtaking as you look up to the towering walls of the black canyon. The hike back up can be steep at times, so take plenty of breaks if needed and just take in the beauty that surrounds you.
