Hike your first 14er!
Idaho Springs, Colorado
Description
Added by Zach Freund
A lot of people want to be able to claim being able to say that the have climbed a 14er. Mt. Bierstadt is by far the closest and best to check that off! This 14,060 foot tall peak stands right near Mt. Evans, giving you the same views, but without all of the tourists and the fee to get in! The trail is a 3.5 mile hike each way, but is only difficult at the top where one negotiates boulders to reach the summit! The views from the top of the summit are like nothing else, and let you see as far as you can into the mountains while still being just a bit above them!
To get to the trail from the north take off the exit for Georgetown off of I-70, following signs for Guanella Pass. Once on the pass, go about 12 miles and the trail head and parking lot will be on your left! If you are coming from the south, take highway 285 until you reach the town of Grant following signs for Guanella Pass. Once on the road go approximately 13 miles where the trail head and parking lot will be on you right. Note - On the weekends, the parking lots fill up and cars park along the street!
