Backpack through the Great Sand Dunes

Once you arrive to the Sand Dunes, start this adventure by going to the Visitor Center. There, from the hours of 9-5:30 you can pick up a backcountry permit. These are relatively easy to obtain, after a quick briefing by a ranger, but keep in mind the number of permits is limited. 

Then, choose from the various parking lots in front of the dunes, and begin your hike. Depending on where you hike in, anywhere from 1-3 miles may be required for overnight camping (to be over the dune ridges and out of sight of the general public.)

From there its all up to you. The wide range of dunes ranges in difficulty levels and make for awesome backpacking hikes, or day trips. The night under the stars is magical on its own, with clear nights revealing some of the best milky way views in the country.

When the time comes to leave, remember to pack out what you packed in (trash, food, feces, stoves, etc) and to know the direction in which you came from. A map and compass are useful for finding your way back, and as always, for general navigation and safety. Also note that campfires are not permitted (stoves are), although anyone who lugs firewood up and over those dunes certainly deserves one.
