Great way to summit Mount Evans, one of Colorado's many 14ers. This approach is nice because it was incredible views and you avoid the crowds from the road that goes up to the summit. Best choice for your first 14er!

Please note: if you are not accustomed to high elevation, this hike can be much more difficult. Even if you are used to high elevation, this hike isn't a walk in the park. This is a serious mountaineering trail that can be very dangerous if you aren't apt enough. Always bring a buddy when climbing a 14er.

Roads to Mount Evans and Summit Lake should be clearly marked, so getting to the Summit Lake parking lot should be fairly easy. If you have any trouble or aren't sure, ask the park ranger stationed at the booth at the start of the road, they are very friendly and know their stuff. The road up to Mt. Evans is a little sketchy, definitely make sure your brakes are fully functional before your adventure. The west ridge via Mt. Spalding approach begins at an elevation of roughly 12,850 feet along the shores of Summit Lake. There are bathrooms there, so use them before you get too far. Hike to the north end of the lake and you will see a sign marking a trail to Mt. Spalding. The trail is pretty clear, but check out the route description here: http://www.14ers.com/route.php...

Usually there are at least a few other groups of people climbing at once, so if you lose track of the trail, just follow the herd or the abundant kerns.

On the way down you can either go back down the same way you came, or follow the Northeast Face route described here: http://www.14ers.com/route.php...

This trail doesn't have any rock climbing involved, but involves a small amount of scrambling and navigating through loose rock/talus. It is rated as a class 2 14er trail, and is described as "more difficult hiking that may be off-trail."

The shortest route is about 4.5 miles long round (if you don't summit Mt. Spalding) but can be as long as 5.5 miles, so make sure you get an early start! Total elevation gain is roughly 2,000 feet.

Lots of awesome views of surrounding Rockies. The trail follows an alpine landscape (mostly rocky with low-lying plants) and is above tree line. Keep an eye out for pikas and mountain goats! Check out the pictures for what you'll see (please forgive the amateur photography haha).
