Velocity Basin is a very good area to ski or snowboard either late or early season when the major ski areas are closed and there are not many other options to shred! It is a steep, wide chute that has many opportunities from side jumps to POWDER.
Once you get to Silverton, CO, follow CO Rd. 110 or Greene Street until you come to a dirt road with Cement Creek off to the left side of the road. Follow the dirt road until it comes to a mining operation about 6 miles up. Take the road past the mining operation and head back into the forest. The road will open up and you will be in a huge valley facing a huge mountain range as your front face. There is a smaller chute closer to the right of the range. That is your chute to go down, but the whole area has incredible snow.
The hike is a doozy, but is completely worth it. Snowshoeing is the best way to go about the hike, but I personally did it without so it can be done. If you look off the backside you can see the town of Silverton and the mountain range in the distance behind. The area is known for getting massive amounts of snow, so it is best to go early before there is enough snow to cause an avalanche.
