Spruce Creek Trail is a 6.3 mile hike to the Mohawk Lakes in the incredible backcountry of Breckenridge featuring waterfalls, mining cabins, panoramic views, and wildlife.Keep an eye out for moose, elk, deer, and black bear.
About 2 miles south of Main Street in Breckenridge on Hwy 9, turn onto Spruce Creek Trail Rd and follow the signs to the parking area. Low clearance cars can access this parking area, but 4X4 or AWD is required to reach the upper lots. This is a very popular trail and can get crowded quickly during summer months.
Spruce Creek Trail is located in the White River National Forest, and therefore dispersed camping is allowed with fires (depending on seasonal regulations).
The trail access is clearly marked and maps are readily available. Blue markers can be found on the trees for winter snow navigation. The trail allows hiking, backpacking, trail-running, alpine skiing, snowshoeing, camping, and dogs.
This trail is gently sloping for the first 1.5 miles and then becomes a bit strenuous up near the Lower Mohawk Lake. The Upper Mohawk Lake is an extra quarter mile up steep rock. The higher you go, the better the views.
