Alta Lakes Road is a 5 mile stretch of endless possibilities. On this short drive you can find hiking, fishing, ruins to explore, and some of the best camping in Colorado.

The road is not well maintained and is closed winters. A high clearance vehicle is highly recommended to navigate the deeps ruts and holes you will encounter. The forest service classifies this area as "dispersed camping", meaning there are no formal camp sites, and campers are allowed to set up anywhere they are able to access from the road. This is what makes this place truly special. You are able to camp lakeside, near or even in an old mining structure, or deep in the beautiful Uncompahgre Forest.

Sites along the road are pretty quiet, as most visitors prefer to stay close to the lakes. Lakeside areas can be a little busy at times, but this is a great opportunity to meet some really rad people, mostly locals.

I encourage you to take your time on this short road. Get out of the car. Hike into the woods. Odds are you will see something unforgettable. Enjoy!
