Get Outside: Sunset Over The Tetons

By: Christina Adele Warburg-Hon + Save to a List

Get Outside is a weekly dose of inspiration to get you off the couch and enjoying what nature has to offer.

I had spent the whole day driving around Grand Teton National Park (which is also where I live and work) doing photography and had planned to be farther north in the park for sunset that evening. However, the service was a little slow at the restaurant I had dinner in and so I realized I wouldn't make it to my intended location for sunset. I decided instead to go to the beautiful, but often crowded Schwabacher Landing for sunset. I had not come across anyone else all day long in the park, and so I thought I would be undisturbed there for once. I walked down the trail to my "secret spot" and had been there about fifteen minutes when a large group of people invaded my silence and set their tripods up immediately in front of mine. At that point, I thought that the best part of sunset was over, the wind was blowing pretty fiercely, making the water choppy enough where there wasn't much of a reflection anyway and I had no desire to be around this group of people, so I packed up and began the short hike back to the car. About halfway back to the parking lot, as I passed the one pond that was protected from the wind, the sky completely lit up, as if just for me. I was in the perfect spot to capture both the sky and the reflection undisturbed and suddenly I was very thankful that the large group had pushed me out of the spot that I had occupied previously. Definitely one of the better sunsets I have witnessed in my three years here in the Tetons.
