Camp Under Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon is a must stop for those driving along Highway 14 between the Owens and Antelope Valleys. The park is located where the southernmost tip of the Sierra Nevada converge with the El Paso Range and features scenic desert cliffs, buttes, and spectacular rock formations. Each tributary canyon is unique, with dramatic shapes and vivid colors. The sandstone formations are nicely varied,...
Hike Nightmare Gulch
Heading north on highway 14, pass the turnoff for Ricardo campground on your left and take the second turn-off on the right, immediately past the large rock outcropping. Park and walk a few feet up the obvious trail and you should see a sign for Scenic Canyon to the right. Follow that trail across the open country and past the aptly named formation to a metal gate. There is no entry for anyone ...
Off-Road to McIver's Cabin
A little over 2 hours north of LA on Highway 14, there is an abrupt turnoff for Horse Canyon Road, which is also SC65. Just a few hundred meters off the 14 there is a large map which you continue straight by and follow SC65 for about 7 miles, along relatively flat dirt roads. The trail does become too intense for non 4x4 cars, so do not attempt without a proper vehicle.Once you see the signs ...

Trona Pinnacles

From the drive-in to the drive-out, bone-chilling and awe-inspiring landscape as far as the eye can see. Caterpillars, spiders and the "company providing" sound of an owl will help you feel...
Night Photography on the Road to Trona
The town of Trona is very small but the landscape here is definitely one you shouldn't miss out on seeing. These crazy tufa formations were formed underwater before Searles Lake dried up many years ago. Amazingly, they are still standing tall! Very tall in fact, you can see how they've dwarfed my Grand Prix in one of my shots.
You might hear that the road is unmanageable without a 4-wheel driv...
