The Cougar Ridge Trail to Engelmann Oak Trail Loop in Daley Ranch offers a 4.2-mile adventure through one of Southern California's rare Engelmann oak woodlands. This moderate loop combines scenic ridge views with shaded oak groves, providing a diverse hiking experience in Escondido's backcountry.
Trail Details:
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Time: 2-2.5 hours
- Dogs: Allowed on leash
- Parking: Free lot at Daley Ranch main entrance (La Honda Drive)
- Fees/Permits: No entrance fee or permits required
Starting from the main Daley Ranch parking area, Cougar Ridge Trail climbs steadily through coastal sage scrub before connecting with the Engelmann Oak Trail. The loop features some of the ranch's oldest and largest Engelmann oaks, a protected species native to this region. Interpretive signs along the way highlight these magnificent trees and their ecological importance.
The trail offers a mix of sun and shade, with several benches positioned at scenic overlooks. While most of the trail is well-maintained, some sections have rocky terrain and moderate inclines. The route is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers, so trail awareness is important.
Best hiked from October through May when temperatures are mild. Summer hikers should start early and bring plenty of water. The trail network connects with other Daley Ranch paths, allowing for longer hiking options.
Facilities include restrooms at the trailhead parking lot. Trail markers are present at major intersections, though first-time visitors should consider bringing a trail map.
