Cataract Falls Trail, High Marsh, Kent Trail, and Helen Market Trail

A personal favorite is the Cataract Falls Trail, a moderate 2.5-mile out-and-back hike following Redwood Creek to the base of a 25-foot waterfall. The trail starts from the outskirts of town, winding through a lush redwood forest before opening up near the falls. Without crowds, you can peacefully take in the sights and sounds of water rushing over rock into pools below. Make sure to pause at the small sandy beach just before the falls to enjoy this hidden oasis.

Further inland, Kent Trail and Helen Market Trail combine for a longer 5-mile loop with panoramic ocean views from atop the coastal bluffs. The landscape shifts from forest to open grassland as you gradually make your way uphill. Find pockets of wildflowers in the spring before arriving at the rugged cliffs along Highway 1. Locals recommend completing the loop counter-clockwise to end with an epic coastal viewpoint.

No trip to Bolinas is complete without a Cataract Falls hike, where you can experience the area's natural splendor up-close. Prepare for some uneven terrain and dress in layers, as the coast stays cool year-round. Avoid visiting during heavy rain, as trails can become slippery. Arrive early on weekends to beat the crowds and claim one of the limited parking spots. Expect to cross a few small footbridges and possibly get your feet wet while navigating the trail. Bring a camera to photograph the falls, as well as a snack to enjoy by the serene beach. With scenic trails ranging from easy to strenuous, Bolinas offers top-notch hiking for everyone.

To reach the trailhead, take Mesa Road west from downtown Bolinas. After approximately 1 mile, turn left onto Overlook Drive and follow it for 0.3 miles until you see the parking area and trail entrance on your left.
