Tucked away in the lush forests of Mount Tamalpais lies the hidden gem of Cataract Falls, a scenic waterfall flowing into the tranquil Alpine Lake. The moderate 5+ mile out-and-back hike along Simmons Trail treats you to peaceful wilderness while allowing quick access from Stinson Beach.

The trail starts out crossing a wooden footbridge over Redwood Creek before a gradual uphill climb through oak and bay trees. Eventually the dense forest opens up to reveal Alpine Lake, a serene high-mountain lake ringed by evergreens and fed by Cataract Falls. Frothy white cascades tumble down exposed rock faces into turquoise pools below. It's a photographer's paradise, with the crystal waters reflecting the surrounding trees and blue skies.

There are several prime photo spots along the lake, including chunky boulders and knolls jutting out into the water. I recommend packing a polarizing filter to cut glare and bring out the colors. Go early in the morning or late afternoon for the best golden light.

After circling Alpine Lake, follow the trail up alongside Cataract Falls to capture the tumbling whitewater with lush greenery in the background. Marvel at the unique geology of the waterfall's exposed sandstone and basalt. Listen to the soothing sounds of water rushing over rock.

The cool lake and falls provide welcome relief on a hot day. Keep an eye out for colorful wildflowers like Indian paintbrush dotting the hillsides in spring. Deer, quail, and other wildlife are also frequently spotted.
