If you're traveling on CA-62, keep an eye out on the south side of the road for the enormous shrine of retired footwear from passers by. Be sure to leave some of your own well worn footwear and take some photos of the shoe clad desert landscape. Make sure to pull a safe distance from the side of the road, which is frequented by large trucks and fast moving vehicles. 

The North Algodones Dunes Wilderness System offers 200 square miles of open dune wilderness to explore. You can do as little or as much as you want in this vast open space. I found these amazing dunes when traveling from Phoenix to San Diego. These are a nice break from the 5+ hour drive. They are very picturesque and nice to walk on. I would advise to avoid the summer as I would imagine it would be uncomfortably hot.  When you are driving on the I-8 in either direction, you can take the Grey's Well Road exit to explore these dunes.
