Hiking The Slot
From the parking lot, you will take the trail into the canyon that is directly in front of you. This will be the hardest and steepest part of the hike. There are no trail markers for the Slot. You can take the trail to the right of the parking lot very briefly, but make sure or you don't go too far before looping back or you will miss the Slot.
As you enter, the walls start t...
Fonts Point
The best time to go to Fonts point is right before the sun sets. It is located in the desert, so be sure to dress warmly and bring a blanket or two.
In order to get to Fonts Point, you'll have to drive through roughly 4 miles of sand and rocks (8-miles roundtrip). 4x4 is strongly recommended, but keep an eye on road conditions. Alternatively, you could hike out and back. NOTE: only street-lega...
Hike the Calcite Mine Trail in the Anza-Borrego Desert
Open from March until October - but I would not particularly recommend this hike in the summer months, unless you started in the wee almost dark hours. This is the desert and it gets hot early and quickly. This is a former calcite mine with slot canyons, great rock formations and some shady areas to chill in.Park at the Calcite Mine Lookout and then walk up to the trail.Trail Head coordinates &a...
Anza Borrego Metal Sculptures
Here's a map I made that marks where most of the sculptures are (here).
First, you enter the park and drive through the little city of Borrego Springs. There will be a roundabout you can't miss, so you know you're on the right path. There is nowhere to park to get to the sculptures specifically, so just keep that in mind and the map I made should help. Some of the sculptures you will need to d...
Maidenhair Falls via Hellhole Canyon Trail
This 5.1 mile hike begins near the visitor center of Anza Borrego Desert State Park and gains 974 feet of elevation while climbing up a canyon to a small waterfall. It is an interesting hike as you can see the plant life change as you get closer to the waterfall. There are parts where the trail get hard to follow. Just keep hiking up towards the sound of the waterfall.
Off-Road through Split Mountain in Anza Borrego
For all you desert lovers- this is a must. Or for all you SD residents that want to try something new and take a break from the populated trails within the county- spend a day in Anza Borrego and include this on your list. This state park is just a quick jaunt outside of the town of Julian. This means that it is still within a day’s drive and you can also include a stop at Julian as well.Split M...
