The Japanese Garden ("Suihoen") at Donald C. Tillman Reclamation Plant is located in the bustling San Fernando Valley. This tranquil 6.5-acre garden features a unique blend of three distinct styles. The Japanese Garden, envisioned by Dr. Koichi Kawana, starts with a serene Zen meditation area, complete with Tortoise Island and a trio of Buddha stones. Continuing along, visitors encounter a lush Chisen garden, designed for leisurely strolls with its waterfalls, lakes, and meticulously hand-carved Japanese stone lanterns. The journey concludes at the Shoin Building, housing an authentic teahouse and adjacent tea garden.
The concept of integrating a Japanese Garden with a water reclamation plant was pioneered by Donald C. Tillman. This garden not only showcases the aesthetic beauty of traditional Japanese landscaping but also demonstrates a sustainable use of reclaimed water in what is considered a fragile environment.
Every detail of the garden reflects authenticity while striving to harmonize with modern buildings and the natural surroundings of the San Fernando Valley. Modeled after 18th and 19th-century strolling gardens of Japanese feudal lords, the Chisen-Kaiyushiki style emphasizes expansive lawns and a bright, open ambiance.
Designed to be appreciated throughout all four seasons, the garden boasts a diverse array of flora including azaleas, cherry trees, magnolias, and more. This "garden of water and fragrance," dedicated in 1984, serves as a serene sanctuary amidst the urban hustle, offering a space for peaceful contemplation and a celebration of nature's beauty.
