Hiking to Potato Chip Rock

Hike to potato chip rock, san diego, ca

By: Britt M + Save to a List

This hike gave me some of my favorite views out of all the San Diego hikes I've done so far. You start out at Lake Poway park and head to the right side of the lake from the parking lot where the trail starts. At first it's a bit of ups and downs and then eventually it becomes a steady incline. About halfway through the hike you start having to climb up "rock stairs" which puts a burning in your thighs. The boulders become larger as you get closer to the top and around this point there is a neat lookout area. There is a large, flat rock and a tree which makes for a cool photo break. Once you get to the top you will have some seriously breathtaking views of San Diego County. We went on a Monday and there was still a short line to take your photo with Potato Chip Rock. We didn't mind it though because it was a good opportunity to take a break from our trip up.

Something I did not realize was that it's a little challenging to actually climb onto the rock. You have to climb up onto a large boulder and then make a small jump from the first boulder to Potato Chip Rock. I have a fear of heights so it took me some time to try and talk myself into reaching down onto the next boulder. I eventually ended up walking down to the bottom of the first boulder and climbing up it to get onto Potato Chip.

All in all this was a beautiful hike, close to home, and a good workout. I would certainly do it again and recommend it to anyone.
