The Horseshoe and Desert Parks Loop in Scottsdale, Arizona, is a 1.69-mile loop trail that offers a variety of outdoor activities. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round. The trail is rated as moderate, with a steady incline and some rocky sections that require careful footing. The trail winds through the Sonoran Desert, offering views of the McDowell Mountains and the surrounding desert landscape. Along the way, hikers will pass through stands of saguaro cacti and other desert vegetation. Wildlife sightings are common, with potential to see creatures such as roadrunners, jackrabbits, and even the occasional coyote. The trail also features a river, which can be a welcome sight in the arid desert landscape. There are several spots along the trail where hikers can stop and enjoy the view, or take a break in the shade of a palo verde tree. Hikers should bring plenty of water, as there are no facilities along the trail. It's also recommended to start early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. Despite the lack of amenities, the Horseshoe and Desert Parks Loop offers a rewarding hike through a unique desert landscape.

Hike Bell's Pass
Starting at 1800 ft elevation, the trail begins at Gateway Loop. This part of the trail will start off pretty flat and be more crowded than Bell's Pass depending on the day and time you are hiking. If you enjoy running this would be the time to do it before you reach Bell's Pass and the incline in elevation begins. Along this path on the right will be Scottsdale on the left the mountainside. Gateway Loop
The Gateway Trailhead is one access point into the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy in Scottsdale and is my favorite “Gateway” into the treasure trove of great trails and vistas in the McDowell Mountains. The Gateway Trailhead provides great accessibility for a quick hike or trail run at the end of the workday.
The Gateway Loop Trail is 4.5 miles long and has 650 feet of elevation gain, which mak...
Marcus Landslide Trail
Named after a landslide that scientists say occurred over 500,000 years ago, this interpretive hiking trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a perfect easy outing for families and nature lovers alike. It begins from the Tom's Thumb trailhead (shared parking lot), which is another beautiful hike (if a bit more strenuous).
Featuring unique rock formations, this trail winds for 4 miles and ha...
Tom's Thumb
The infamous “thumb” can be seen from most places in the valley – a white burst of rock jutting skyward out of the desert ridgeline.
The new Tom’s Thumb Trailhead in 2012 has nice restrooms and offers tons of information about the surrounding rock climbing areas, day hikes and desert knowledge about the flora and fauna. Since this area is a bit removed from the city, you are likely to find ...
