City Adventures: Walking The Ben Franklin Bridge

Walk across the suspension bridge linking Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey.

By: Alex DiTomaso + Save to a List

Once I moved to Philadelphia, I made a Philly Bucket List, ranging from tourist attractions such as finding the best cheesesteak, visiting the Rocky Statue to finding the best dive bars (McGlinchey's is #1... just for the record) and even walking across the Ben Franklin Bridge. This was an adventure outside my comfort zone.

I chose a calm day, and parked in the Olde City area. I headed towards the ginormous suspension bridge and was surprised by how crowded the walkway was. It is wide enough for two way traffic, joggers and bikers. The view certainly did not disappoint! Once I reached the midpoint, I just waited for the sun to set over the city. A local even took a seat on the edge of the bridge railing and pulled out a book to read. The 2.89 mile walkway offers panorama views of the city skyline. This may not be for those scared of heights.

I would recommend this walk to tourists but especially to locals because as it turns out, everyone from the area has driven over the Ben Franklin Bridge but few have walked from state to state.
