Blissful Beach Backpacking - Assateague Island State Park
Do you like long walks on the beach? Do you like wild horses? Do you like adventure? If so, Assateague Island State Park is calling your name.
Assateague Island is a place I've visited since I was a little kid. Once I discovered that you can camp on the beach with wild horses, I truly was convinced that Assateague Island is a fairytale.
Really though - Assateague has both established campsites and first come, first serve backpacking permits. Located just down the shore from OCMD, Assateague has a more beautiful beach with less tourists.
I decided to backpack on Memorial Day Weekend, a popular beach weekend so I made sure to arrive to the ranger station early. With my permit in hand, I grabbed my backpack and began to walk barefoot down the beach. Blissful beach backpacking…
I arrived to my backcountry site, and began to set up. Soon, a herd of wild horses grazed near by. Many tourists are drawn to this beach to see the horses and now I was in their territory! I enjoyed a beach day and at night you could see campfires spread out on the beach. It's very quiet here, but be sure to remember your bug spray because the horse flys can be viscous!
