Our Favorite Gear for Tropical Island Adventures - Spring 2018

Curated by The Outbound Collective

The experienced tropical island explorer knows that like any outdoor adventure, the right gear is required to maximize your fun (and to avoid injury). From swimwear to footwear, eyewear to solar power, here is the gear our Deep Blue Roatán crew chose to use on their trip.

The single most important piece of equipment in any tropical gear kit is sunscreen, and the broad-spectrum Bare Republic Neon sticks with SPF50 were crucial *and* a ton of fun. Whether Snorkeling Port Royal Gorge or jumping off The Keyhole Rope Swing, they got the job done.

Hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and leaping out into the ocean at sunset, we needed just the right amount of pack space to carry our phones, sunscreen, identification, and lempiras and the Cotopaxi Bataan was perfect.

Verstail swimwear that works both on deck *and* underwater while looking great was a requirement for the team and the Summersalt suits did not disappoint. The Swan Dive, a classic one-piece as fitting sunbathing at the pool as it was snorkeling, was our favorite.

Power outages were frequent on Roatán, meaning a reliable and waterproof lighting *and* power source was almost impossible to come by, and that's where the collapsable/inflatable Luci Pro Series became perhaps the most beloved item on our trip. Whether volunteering in local schools and helping light classrooms to charging phones while chilling at the Keyhole Rope Swing, we kept our Lucis with us at all time.

The polarized Sunski Singlefins were a total hit whether we were relaxing with a boat day or scouring the turtle glass flats for permit and bonefish, and pink lenses went great with that turquoise sea on our deep sea fishing trip.

When scrambling across sharp exposed coral or leaping off the slippery decks of sailboats out into the sunset, the versatile, VIVOBAREFOOT BLOOM delivered. Made from algae, the BLOOM is the first truly sustainable shoe in the world and protected our feet in and out of the water.
