The trail can be enjoyed for any distance you want to go, and can be accessed from numerous points. My favorite way to enjoy the trail is to pack a picnic and park at the Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area and bike from there to the end of the trail and back. Round trip it’s a little over 50 miles. When you get back to the observation area, there is a nice open park with a playground and picnic area. It’s a great place to fly kites and watch the airplanes land.

The walk is short, but pleasant. The fort itself and visitors center are well worth the visit. There is a really pretty picnic area to the right just as you pass through the gate with tables and trash cans that is more sheltered from the wind than most of the park.

This is an extremely easy hike, with very pretty views along the river and out into the Chesapeake. It’s a great hike for very young children, with benches in the open area around the light house where you can enjoy the view and let the kids romp around and hunt frogs. On the drive in, you’ll pass through a quaint little town call North East. I’d highly recommend stopping for a Maryland crab cake and some local brew on the patio of one of the cafes lining Main Street.
