This relatively short hike provides you with an amazing 360 degree view of Yosemite Valley! Not as well known as Glacier Point, Sentinel Dome is far less crowded and offers a broader view of all that Yosemite has to offer.
Although relatively short, this hike has so much to offer in the 2.2 mile round trip. With the trailhead at 7,700 foot elevation, the trail is not very populated and is so peaceful, especially around dusk when the sunlight peeks through the trees. By the end of the hike, you will gain 400 feet in elevation. The trail is usually covered in snow for a part of the year when Glacier Point Road is closed and sometimes for a few weeks after the road opens back up, so you will have to follow the footsteps of previous hikers.
As you hike along this pleasant trail, you will see numerous wildflowers and tall pine trees. Towards the beginning of the hike, you will cross a cute little bridge over a stream. The trail is easy to follow and is well marked with multiple signs. Once you reach Sentinel Dome, you will have to take a short climb to the top, but I have seen young kids take on the task, so don't turn around now - the view is so worth it!!
Once at the top, take in the breathtaking 360 degree view of Yosemite Valley. From the top, you will be able to see Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, Half Dome, Nevada Falls, & the High Sierra Peaks. There is plenty of room on the top of the dome, but be careful not to go too close to the edge as it gets steeper. On the summit, you can also see the Jeffrey pine, which is the world's most famous dead tree and is nestled in between the slabs of rock.
I highly recommend being on top of Sentinel Dome at sunset. The sun illuminates the valley & the sky turns into a myriad of watercolors. This is truly any photographer's dream as there is so much to capture from the views that Sentinel Dome has to offer at this height. However, it can get quite chilly once the sun goes down, so be sure to come prepared with layers and a flashlight for the walk back. The next time you're in Yosemite, do not leave without experiencing sunset at Sentinel Dome - you will not be disappointed.
