Description

Added by Kristen Sharer

Enjoy the stillness of winter on this snowshoe trek that ends with jaw-dropping views of Yosemite's most famous landmarks.

Starting at Badger Pass, snowshoe along Glacier Point Road, then take either the Ridge Trail (steeper, denser forest views) or keep going until you get to the Meadow Trail (more gradual with great meadow views). Once you leave the crowds and the road behind, enjoy the stillness of the winter forest. The trail is easy enough to follow, especially if it's been a while since the last snowfall. If you're lucky enough to come right after a fresh blanket of powder has fallen, you won't have the luxury of following a well trod path, but yellow markers in the trees will guide you well enough. After about 2.5/3 miles, the Ridge and Meadow Trails combine for the final mile out to Dewey Point. Enjoy panoramic views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, El Cap, and Clouds Rest. No overnight camping is allowed out on the point, so once you're done drinking in the view, head back along the trail until you leave the designated no camping zone, and then find a snowy home at least 100ft off the trail to spend the night.

Notes:(1) This route can be done as a day trip, but the sunset and sunrise visible from the Dewey area beg for you to spend at least one night out.(2) Glacier Point Rd, Ridge Trail, and Meadow Trail are also cross-country ski trails, so if you're on snowshoes, stay to the edge of the trail and don't trample the ski tracks(3) Wilderness Permits and information about where camping is allowed can be obtained from the A-Frame ranger station at Badger Pass. Permit reservations are not required in winter, but can be made online for a $5 fee.
