This is one of the best hikes I have done. The falls are breathtaking, chances of seeing wildlife is high, and a natural warm pool to jump and swim in is pure joy. The best time of year to go is in September. Hardly any bugs and the geothermal pool is really pleasant.

Union Falls is located in Yellowstone National Park in the Southwest corner, an area less known to the public. This area is known as the Bechler area or is called Cascade Corner due to the number of waterfalls, streams, and rivers in the area. It's called Union Falls due to two streams joining at the falls. The falls is quite wide which adds to it's majestic view. The trail has 2 river crossings that you have to ford. If you go in September, as I did, then the crossing will only go up to your knees or thighs. I recommend wearing a water shoe of some sort. (I use my Chacos!) Two other crossings of streams are easily done by fallen trees and a log put there by someone maintaining the trail. Once you come across a ranger cabin you are almost there. This cabin is a patrol post for rangers who are mostly there to look for poachers in the area. There are two campsites near this patrol post. About a mile after the cabin the trail will divide to the right or left. Go left(north) to visit the geothermal pool known as Scout pool or Ouzel pool. Jump in, the water is amazing. To the right is an quarter mile up hill climb to Union Falls. Truly breathtaking.

Remember this is grizzly bear country. We actually didn't see any grizzlies but we did see a black bear!

Since this is located in Yellowstone make sure you have paid the appropriate park fees.

From Ashton, ID it's about 31.4 miles to the trailhead near Fish Lake.

From Ashton head east on ID-47 N/Main St toward S 6th St. Turn right onto E 1400 N. Turn right onto N 4500 E. Continue onto 4525 E. Turn left onto E 1200 N/Ashton-Flagg Ranch Rd. Continue to follow Ashton-Flagg Ranch Rd. Turn left onto Forest Rd 022. Slight right onto Forest Rd 023. Slight right onto Forest Rd 025. This is where the trailhead begins. There is a small area to park.
