Description

Added by Leigh Wilson

Explore an island in Lake Michigan - suitable for dayhikes, backpacking and kayaking! Great spot for beginner backpackers, or if you prefer, dayhike and enjoy the amenities of nearby Door County afterwards.

Rock Island State Park is located off the tip of the Door County Peninsula in Wisconsin. You take a car ferry from Door County to Washington Island, drive across Washington Island to catch the passenger ferry to Rock Island. There are historical structures to explore, including a lighthouse and the original 1920's boathouse, and a trail following the perimeter of the island, which is about a 5 mile loop. There are backpacker sites on the far side of the island, and they are popular with backpackers and kayakers. On a mid-September weekend, it wasn't too crowded.
