Backcountry Ski Twin Lakes
A beautiful area, often much quieter than the Mt Baker Resort, and plenty of lines to ski!
Drive east on the Mount Baker Highway, a little less than 13 miles past the town of Glacier. You will reach a maintenance shed on the left with a sign that says "Tomyhoi Trail 5, Twin Lakes 7". Drive 4.5 miles on this road to the Tomyhoi Lake trailhead. If you are in a 4WD vehicle, continue as far as conditions will allow. Otherwise, you will have to gear up here and skin up the road for a ways.
{You will need a backcountry ski/snowboard setup, or a pair of snowshoes with a bag capable of carrying skis/snowboard on your back. Make sure to do a beacon check, and assure that everyone in the group has all of the necessary avalanche safety gear.}
Once you make it to the lakes, whether that be by car or by skins, look up to the right. That small summit will be the optimal goal. Make your way up the right ridge line, zig-zagging up through the trees until you reach a blank apron on your left. Skirt the trees on the right, making your way, as you see fit, to the top. Enjoy the fairly large, flat summit, take some pics, and decide your choice of line for the way down!
There are two shoots on the side facing the lakes that are often fun and safe. There are also lower angled options more to skier's left. Make sure to check the snow conditions before heading out, so you can make a smart decision considering avalanche danger and your ability.
It is a truly beautiful location, and makes an unreal place to shred some pow! Even better at sunset...
