Lakewood, Washington

Kayak on American Lake

Originally added by André Turenne

Great kayaking spot with water access from both Joint Base Lewis-McChord and South-West Lakewood!

There are several beautiful launching spots and beaches along the lake. For military members, their families, and veterans, the best launching spots are Fort Lewis Beach (near American Lake Conference Center), Shoreline Park, and Summer Cove (near the Bistro at Russell Landing). For non-military members, the best spot is American Lake Park. Very easy to park and launch!

There is also a convenient spot behind the Northwest Adventure Center if you want to rent a kayak and launch it from there without having to mount it on your vehicle. The spot is 100m behind the rental place, past the small cottages, and by a fishing dock.

Bring your kayak or rent it, if military, at Northwest Adventure Center on NCO Beach Rd in Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Here is the link for more information on kayak renting.

The lake has an acreage of 1,091. The water gets pretty warm in July and August, perfect for a quick swim after kayaking. On a clear day, Mt Rainier is perfectly visible!
