Paraglide Off Tiger Mountain

Issaquah, Washington

Description

Added by Nic Morgan

Experience the euphoric sensation of gliding through fresh mountain air and soaring next to the birds with stunning unobstructed panoramic views that can only be seen from a paraglider's perspective.

Paragliding is considered to be the purest form of human flight. Many people think of paragliding as a thrill-seeking activity and running off the edge of mountain definitely gets the adrenaline pumping and falls into the thrill category. However, once airborne, paragliding turns into a tranquil, enlightening, peaceful and even relaxing adventure.

Tiger Mountain has one of the best maintained premier sites in the country for paragliding. Prepare to factor in about 3 hours for the adventure. Seattle Paragliding (www.seattleparagliding.com) is located at the base of Tiger Mountain next to the landing zone on Issaquah-Hobart Road. Once you arrive, you will go to the harness barn where you will go through a quick orientation describing the flight and be fitted to a harness. After a waiver sign (literally signing your life away) you will be assigned to an instructor. Walk the 100 yards to the landing zone, which is also the trailhead to Poo Poo Point. You will meet your instructor and wait for the shuttle bus. There is an additional fee for the shuttle ($20 when I flew), or you can choose to hike the Poo Poo Point trail which will take around an hour and pay half to have the gear shuttled to the top.

When you reach the top they will make sure the flying conditions are good. If not, it's back down the mountain in the bus. Payment will be good until the next available day with good weather, or can be fully refunded. You will be helped into your suit, helmet and harness and you are given step by step instructions, including what to expect from the take off and the flight. And no you don't have to jump of the edge of a cliff, all you have to do is take a few steps and then you are lifted into the air. Sit back, relax and look at the fantastic views. Sit back, relax and look at the fantastic views. The flights take about 30 minutes. No jumping off a cliff necessary! Simply run a few steps and then you are lifted into the air. Sit back in your harness, relax and prepare for sensory overload with mesmerising 3,000’ views of Mt. Rainier, Seattle, Mt. Baker, Mt. Si, Lake Sammamish and more! Expect about 30 minutes in the air (could be more, could be less depending on conditions). Your pilot will try to find some good thermals (uprising air warmed from the Earth) to stay airborne. Landing is as simple as a soft 'stand up' when reaching the ground, your pilot will instruct you on when to touch down - you may have to take about 2 or 3 steps. Simple!

Disclaimer: I was immediately hooked and am now taking lessons!
