Mount Ellinor can be attacked from two different (merging) trails - from the Lower Trailhead (6.2 miles roundtrip), or the Upper Trailhead (3.2 miles roundtrip). The Upper Trailhead has greater intensity of elevation gain, and also provides a good unisex bathroom, along with a picnic table or two that already have an amazing view.
The trail begins with a steep climb right from the get-go, and doesn't let up much until the summit. You begin through a beautiful dense forest which eventually opens up to large rock faces, where you scramble up a well maintained path through the boulders, with stunning views the whole way.
As you reach the summit, you begin to see mountain goats all around you, as well as a breathtaking 360 degree view of the Olympic Peninsula. On a clear day, you can see the major cities of Olympia and Seattle, and everyone's favorite Washington volcanoes, like Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens.
As a friendly reminder – please give the mountain goats their space. While they're amazing creatures to watch, you're in their territory and they're letting you visit, and can potentially be dangerous if threatened. Cheers!
