The well-known Snow Lake holds the title for the most visited lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and is a staple for hiking in the Pacific Northwest. Let me tell you why.

Snow Lake is a magical place to experience a day hike to a serene deep blue lake. Located approximately an hour East of Seattle, the trailhead can be found off I-90 in Alpental. This well-traveled trail is a secret to few and on weekends the parking lot will be filled with adventures like you! Plan to get there early, or if able, try to experience this journey on a weekday. Starting at 2,600 feet, this 7 mile (round-trip) hike has its ups and downs, literally. Venture through the woods, making your way up switchbacks and after a mile you will come to a clearing where you will be able to see Chair Peak and stunning views of the valley below. Continue upward where you will arrive at the ridge greeted by large boulder. With the lake below, this 4,400 peak makes for a great place to take pictures, have a quick snack, or stretch out your legs from the climb. From here, head to the right and follow the trail down to the lake. Crossing a small creek near the lake, continue on the path as the views will only get better. The clear blue alpine lake water combined with the surrounding mountain range provides a great backdrop for a picnic, a yoga session or simply a place to relax. The trail proceeds around the lake and if you are feeling extra adventurous go a little bit further and you will find Gem Lake – Snow Lakes little sister. This year round destination attracts numerous adventures as there are so many possibilities for outdoor activities. In the summer, many will enjoy time in the water with their stand up paddle board, kayak, or simply jumping in for a quick swim to cool off. On a clear summer day, this is the ideal place to bring the kids, dogs and friends for an unforgettable time in nature. During fall and spring, the trail is always changing colors with the seasons. They say you never hike the same trail twice and this is definitely one that will keep your senses intrigued. Lastly, winter, the most dangerous and also most beautiful time to visit Snow Lake. The snow covered trees paired with the blue lake is a site worth seeing. There is a great snowshoeing trail that can be accessed from the upper parking lot. For beginners, this is a great trail for snowshoeing as there is a 3 mile round trip catwalk that has very little elevation gain. Watch the snow fall as you make your way through the winter wonderland and enjoy the crisp clean mountain air. If conditions allow, you can make the 10 mile loop to Snow Lake, passing Source Lake along the way. It is not uncommon for back country skiers to hike this loop and ski their way down to the parking lot. Be sure to always check pass conditions and avalanche warnings before attempting any winter activities. Be safe, have fun and always pack out what you pack in.
