Camp on Orcas Island

When your ferry ports at Orca, make your way to Obstruction State Park on the east side of the island. The trail head breaks off in two directions. The fastest way to the campground is the 0.6 mile trail heading strait but if you feel like a longer walk you can take the 0.9 mile trail to the left. As you make your way through the old growth forest, you'll start to see the ocean and before you know it the first few camp sites will appear. Some are bigger than others but all have protected fire pits with grates. There's two outhouses available and a very short walk down to a private rock beach. This is where you kick back, open a beer and if you're lucky catch some orca's cruise by! Keep in mind these are first come first serve campsites so I'd recommend getting there early.
The island is fairly small but there's plenty to see outside Obstruction Pass. Moran State park has many family campgrounds, a handful of gorgeous lakes with excellent fishing, a waterfall, hiking trails and a lookout tower at the top of Mt. Constitution. You can stop in the small town of Eastsound for some fresh clams, kayak rentals, shopping, or chat with some sailors over a cold beer in the local pub. Whatever you choose to do, you'll find this little island is a great hidden gem of the PNW.
