Kayak Camping on Cypress Island

Anacortes, Washington

Description

16-18 mile round tripBeautiful, undeveloped beaches to exploreScenic coastlineHike to Eagle Cliff, one of the best places to watch the sunset in the San JuansSpend the night on a vacant beachAbundance of marine life (seals, starfish, orcas, etc.)

Cypress Island is dubbed the "last best place" in the San Juan Islands. Almost 90% of the rugged, mountainous island is a natural resource conservation area and a natural area preserve, making this island the least developed in the San Juans. No ferries travel to Cypress, so travel is limited to boaters and sea kayakers, which makes it a perfect getaway for the adventurous types who want to escape the crowds.

The beginning of the trip starts at the quiet Seafarers' Park in Anacortes, Washington. After launching, paddle north towards Guemes Island, hugging the Anacortes coastline. When ready, cross the Guemes Channel to Guemes Island. After paddling for a half mile, break away from the houses and round the southwest tip of Guemes island, setting your sights on Cypress Island. The ideal time to cross the Bellingham Channel (from Guemes to Cypress) is at a flooding tide – this way the currents will be working with you, pushing you north. Once you cross the Bellingham channel it's smooth paddling along the beautiful, marine-life abundant coastline to Pelican Beach. Once you've landed, there are days worth of exploring available. Miles of trails weave through the lush forests of the island. If you are feeling adventurous, you can hike 1.2 miles from Pelican Beach to the 800 ft. Eagle Cliff, arguably one of the best places to watch the sunset in the San Juan Islands. This trip is the perfect overnight or weekend getaway for a couple (or group of friends) looking for seclusion.

Disclaimer: You must understand what the tides will be doing to make this a safe trip. Also be sure to know the weather forecast, as it is ever-changing on the ocean. A radio and navigation chart are recommended.
