The perfect place to watch a summer sunset.
It is my pleasure to introduce you to the perfect spot to watch the sun set atop a mountain. Located just outside the little town of Granite Falls, Mount Pilchuck is a northwest favorite. Only an hour North of Seattle, this area is the gateway to many trails and is ideal for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle. On your way, enjoy the scenic drive on the mountain loop highway - a curvy, tree lined road paralleling the Sauk River. The true adventure begins as you turn off the highway encountering a steep 6 mile gravel road up to the parking lot. Mount Pilchuck originally gained its popularity in 1956 when a small ski resort was opened for a few local ski clubs. Due to lack of snow and complications with expansion permit approval, the ski resort was closed in 1978. Since the closure, the lifts have been removed; however the original fire lookout still remains at the summit and has been restored for adventurers like you. Your destination awaits. As you enter the trail through the pines, your elevation is approximately 3,000 feet. The 5.4 mile round-trip trail is well traveled and easy to follow with peek-a-boo views throughout the journey. After about a mile, the forest starts to clear and the path will be mostly rocky moving forward. As you continue toward the summit you will see markers indicating the correct direction. Be sure to keep your eye out for these helpful signs so you do not get lost. A more defined trail lies ahead and will take you around the South side of the mountain. As you gain elevation with every step, the views of surrounding valleys will build anticipation for what’s to come. Upon reaching the lookout, which was built in 1921, climb the latter and enjoy the 360 degree views of the Pacific Northwest. On a clear day you will be able to see Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, the Olympics and everything in between. While you settle in at 5,300 feet, grab a snack and prepare for a breathtaking show. This is a great place to reflect on nature’s true beauty as the sun sets and vibrant colors take over illuminating the sky. Be sure to capture a few pictures before you strap on your headlamp and say goodnight to this lovely lookout. Always pack out what you pack in and keep a lookout for the markers on your way down to ensure the correct route.
