Hike to the High Bridge via High Bridge Trail. This is a relatively flat 2 mile long hike that leads to the historic high bridge. Persons who traverse the high bridge are rewarded with a dazzling 360 degree panoramic view of the lush woodland, dynamic Appomattox River and spectacular countryside.

The High Bridge Trail traverses Cumberland, Nottoway and Prince Edward counties and the towns of Burkeville, Farmville, Pamplin City, Prospect and Rice. The trail can be completed by foot, bicycle or horseback. The highlight of the trail has to be the mighty "High Bridge" which is a whopping 2400ft long and 125ft high. The high bridge opened in 1854 to allow steam locomotives to cross the Appomattox River. It is the longest recreational bridge in Virginia and among the longest in the United States.

The high bridge can be accessed from a parking lot located 1 mile west of the bridge (553 River Rd in Farmville; milepost 146) for a 2-mile out and back hike. The bridge can also be accessed by another parking lot 3 miles East of the bridge (1681 Aspen Hill Rd in Rice; milepost 144) for a 6-mile out and back hike.

When traversing the high bridge, you are rewarded with a dazzling 360 degree panoramic view of the surrounding woodland. Due to the sheer elevation of the bridge exceeding that of the tree line, there is nothing obstructing your view. Persons traveling the high bridge will also cross the Appomattox river. The trail is mostly flat which makes it appropriate for individuals of all ages. The trail is separated into sections which can be accessed at different points.

The trail is open from dawn until dusk. There are also various benches on the high bridge which are ideal for resting and enjoying the view.
