Insane views? Check. Trees to hammock? Check. Clearest night skies? Have an ORU? Good. Lakes a plenty.
Starting at the Christmas Meadows trail head, there is a little sign-in sheet. Make sure to fill it out for safety, as there is no service in the basin. It is about 6 miles to reach the basin (12-13 miles round trip), with variations in terrain. The trail through Christmas Meadows is easy to follow, having boardwalks and small bridges for the first bit. Soon you will come to a fork. Take a left, putting you on the Amethyst Basin Trail. Have your legs ready for a workout, as the trail gets quite rocky and uphill for a long stretch. Eventually it levels out, and its a straight shot through the trees. Camp set up is pretty much anywhere, just remember to practice leave no trace. If you are looking for solitude, there are some dense trees to the west, or if you are up for it, continue across the basin to the unnamed lake; trees providing wind protection, as well as a beautiful view of the lake.
Multiple hikes and adventures surround the basin, such as Ostler lake, the unnamed lake, Amethyst lake, etc. Also, make sure to see the sunrise!!! The sun hitting the peak is GORGEOUS!If you are prepared, exploring at night can be a fantastic experience, as the milky way is ablaze in the sky.
It can get windy without warning, so make sure to have stakes for your tent, or adequate gear for warm and protection if in a hammock (wind under the hammock is a nightmare if you don't have a mat or some form of insulation).
