We are from the Pacific NW and moved to Texas 3 years ago. We miss the mountains of the West, so took our four small children out to Big Bend for our mountain fix. We went April 2016. This hike was hands down the favorite we've been on in Texas this far (and we've been on a lot). It actually had a few switch backs. Our kids (7, 6, 3, 19 months) loved it (we wore the baby in a backpack because there are a few areas with steep drop offs). They got quite the thrill from hearing their voices and giggles echo off the canyon walls. My favorite was wading out into the middle of the Rio Grande - one foot in the US and one in Mexico (although the water was gross and super slimy/muddy). Definitely bring plenty of water - it can get really hot.

There is a nice view but I wouldn't classify it as a hike. It's a short walk up some stairs to a viewpoint. You can follow the trail to the right for a nice walk. I took my class of nature preschoolers here in January and the weather was perfect. If you do stop by, make sure to swing by nearby Mayfield Park, which has a few short trails through their nature preserve (and enjoy the pretty gardens and peacocks).

This is a really fun little hike. I have taken my four young children (7, 6, 3, 19 months) twice. Spring of 2015 was the best and we had no trouble finding the tracks. The water was still pretty low because of the drought. This year we went in April and the water was a lot higher, with more sediment from recent rain. It was deep enough that my toddlers couldn't go in the water unless they were swimming. We couldn't find the tracks that time. Just take note of the water level before you go - you'll have better luck finding them when it's low. But it's still a fun adventure, either way!
